Verhulst, Johannes (Josephus Hermanus) (1816–1891)

Dutch composer and conductor. He conducted important music societies at Amsterdam and Rotterdam and was court music director at The Hague. Schumann and Mendelssohn were his close friends and important influences on his compositions.

He studied at The Hague Royal School of Music and, after some work as a violinist at the Opera at Cologne, went to Leipzig in 1838. At Mendelssohn's invitation he became conductor of the Euterpe concerts. He was a friend of Schumann and became a member of the Davidsbund. In 1842 he returned to The Hague as court music director and held conducting posts at Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
