Verkhoyansk

Town in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), eastern Siberia, Russian Federation; population (1990) 2,000. Verkhoyansk is situated on the River Yana, 650 km/404 mi northeast of Yakutsk. It was once considered the coldest place on earth, with a mean annual temperature of -70°C, but even lower temperatures have since been recorded at Oimyakon to the southeast, and in Antarctica.

Verkhoyansk is a centre for cattle breeding, and tin mining is undertaken nearby. It was founded in 1638 as a place of internal exile.
