Vermeule, Emily Townsend (1928-2001)

US classicist, art historian, and archaeologist. One of relatively few women full professors at Harvard (1970), she gave the University of California Sather lectures in 1975 and was director of the Harvard Cyprus expedition (1971). Her wide-ranging publications include Euripides V. Electra (1959), Greece in the Bronze Age (1964), and Death in Early Greek Art and Poetry (1978). Vermeule was born in New York City.
