Vermilion River

Name of two US rivers, in the states of Illinois and Minnesota. The longer of the two Vermilion rivers (121 km/75 mi) is in eastern Illinois. Formed by the junction of its North and South branches, it flows northwest past Pontiac and Streator to the Illinois River at Starved Rock. The Vermilion River in northeastern Minnesota is 68 km/42 mi long, and runs from its source in Vermilion Lake (a popular summer vacation area and important iron-mining region) through the Superior National Forest to Crane Lake, near the border with Ontario.
