Vernon| Town in North Okanagan Regional District, south British Columbia; population (1991) 23,500. It is situated near the northern end of Okanagan Lake, 50 km/32 mi north-northeast of Kelowna and 310 km/190 mi east-northeast of Vancouver. An 1840s missionary settlement, 1860s ranch community, and a military camp during World War I, it is now a service and shipping centre for the ranching and fruit growing north Okanagan Valley. Industries include fruit, vegetable, and dairy processing, tanning, and sawmilling. Nearby lakes and ski resorts attract tourists to the area. |
Vernon| Town in Tolland County, north-central Connecticut; population (1990) 29,900. It is located 19 km/12 mi northeast of Hartford. A section of the town lies in Connecticut's central lowland, with gently rolling hills; another section is in the more rugged eastern highlands. Local agriculture produces potatoes. Paper products, television equipment, and plastics are manufactured in the town. |
Vernon| Town in Sussex County, north New Jersey; population (1990) 21,200. It is located 64 km/40 mi northwest of New York City, along the New York state border, in a wooded, mountainous region. It is the site of a popular amusement park; during the winter, the park is the location of the Vernon Valley–Great Gorge ski resort. Hidden Valley ski resort is also in Vernon. |
Vernon| Town and administrative headquarters of Wilbarger County, north-central Texas; population (1990) 12,000. It is located 74 km/46 mi west-northwest of Wichita Falls, on the Pease River, and 18 km/11 mi southwest of the Red River, which serves as the Oklahoma state line. A commercial centre for a region producing oil, wheat, cotton, and cattle, it was established in 1880 on a Texas–Kansas cattle trail. The town has various light manufactures. Vernon Regional Junior College (1970) is in the town. Vernon is headquarters for the vast W T Waggoner ranch, where the Electra oilfield was discovered in 1911. |
