Vero Beach

Town and administrative headquarters of Indian River County, east-central Florida; population (1990) 17,400. It is situated on the Indian River lagoon, 24 km/15 mi north-northwest of Fort Pierce. The town is sited both on the mainland and on Orchid Island on the Atlantic coast, and has 32 km/20 mi of beaches, noted for their sport fishing. It is a shipping point for local citrus fruits, vegetables, and beef. Airplanes are manufactured in the town, and there is a variety of other light industry. Vero Beach is home to the spring training complex of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.
