kerning

Technique of altering the spacing between letters. On very large typefaces, when two letters are placed adjacent, text can look over-spaced. This effect increases with font size. Kerning allows letters to overlap slightly without touching in order to reduce the amount of space in between them.

Kerning is not normally needed below 16-point text and is not always applied since it depends on the letters involved. It differs from simply expanding or condensing letter spacing as it takes into account font style and letter pairs.
