Vesque von Püttlingen, Johann (1803–1883)

Austrian composer of Belgian descent. He was born at the residence of Prince Alexander Lubomirsky. The family moved to Vienna in 1815 and he studied music there with Leidesdorf, Moscheles, and Vořišek. In 1822 he entered Vienna University and in 1827 joined the civil service. In 1829 he wrote his first opera by setting the libretto of Rossini's Donna del lago/Lady of the Lake (based on Scott), and in 1833 he studied counterpoint with Sechter.

Works

opera Turandot (after Gozzi, 1838), Jeanne d'Arc (1840), Liebeszauber (after Kleist's Käthchen von Heilbronn, 1845), Ein Abenteuer Carl des Zweiten (1850), Der lustige Rath (1852) and two unfinished operas; two masses.
