vestiarian controversy

16th-century dispute over the use of clerical vestments. The Puritans opposed clergy wearing the surplice which they felt had overtones of a Catholic priesthood, and the issue was hotly contested under Edward VI and then especially in the first years of Elizabeth I's reign. Matthew Parker, archbishop of Canterbury, ordered conformity to the Book of Common Prayer 1566, signalling the Queen's determination not to reform the Church further.
