Veszprém

Industrial town and commercial centre in western Hungary, 110 km/68 mi southwest of Budapest; population (1993) 65,400. It is the capital of Veszprém county, on the River Séd, north of Lake Balaton in the Bakony Mountains, a major mining area. It has textile and oil plants, and trades in agricultural produce.

The older part of the town stands on a steep rock, and has a Neo-Romanesque cathedral and 18th-century baroque bishop's palace.

There is a chemical technical university.
