Xanten

Town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, near the left bank of the River Rhine, 50 km/31 mi northwest of Düsseldorf; population (1994) 18,700. Its Gothic cathedral was begun in 1190. Xanten is a tourist centre.

The town was the birthplace of St Norbertand, according to legend, the home of the mythical Germanic hero Siegfried.
