Vevey

Tourist resort in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, situated on Lake Geneva, 18 km/11 mi southeast of Lausanne; population (2001 est) 15,200. Vevey is situated on the edge of an area of pasture land and vineyards, in contrast to the area to the south where the mountains of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc are to be found. The town's chief industries are woodworking and the manufacture of chocolate, machinery, and watches.

Vevey is the setting of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's novel La Nouvelle Héloïse/The New Héloïse (1761). The resort hosts the Montreux-Vevey Music Festival of classical music. Established in 1946, it is held every year between August and October.
