Vevay

Town and administrative headquarters of Switzerland County, southeast Indiana; population (1990) 1,400. It is situated 24 km/15 mi east of Madison, on the Ohio River, in an area in which grain, livestock, tobacco, truck crops, dairy items, and flowers are produced. It was settled in 1796 by French Swiss, who established a noted winemaking industry. Edward Eggleston, author of The Hoosier Schoolmaster and other works depicting life in the region, was born here in 1837.

It is enough to say that there sprang up as much comradeship between us as our different habits would allow; and in Charles's rare holidays we went up the Saleve together, or took the boat to Vevay, while I listened dreamily to the monologues in which he unfolded his bold conceptions of future experiment and discovery.
