Viana do Castelo

Capital of Viana do Castelo district, northwest Portugal, at the mouth of the River Lima on the Atlantic coast; population (1991) 9,000. Products include carpets and foodstuffs, and there are cod fisheries.

District of northwest Portugal; area 2,108 sq km/814 sq m; population (1991) 248,700; capital Viana do Castelo. Generally mountainous, Viana do Castelo is crossed east–west by the fertile valley of the River Lima.
