Viareggio

Resort town in Tuscany region, north-central Italy, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, 24 km/15 mi west of Lucca; population (2001 est) 58,600. Viareggio is the oldest seaside resort in Italy, tourism beginning when Giuseppe Barelai founded a health establishment for children here in 1861.

Viareggio contains the Torre Matilde built by the senate of Lucca in 1554 on the Burlamacca canal. The English lyric poet Percy Bysshe Shelley was cremated in Viareggio after drowning nearby, and there is a monument to him in the town.
