Vick, Graham (1953– )| English stage director. He studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester and was director of productions for Scottish Opera (1984–87). In 1987 he joined the City of Birmingham Touring Opera, notably with Der Ring des Nibelungen/The Ring of the Nibelung (1990) and Les Boréades (1993). He worked in London with the English National Opera ensemble from 1984, on Madama Butterfly, Eugene Onegin, and the first performance of Oliver's Timon of Athens. From 1989 he directed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, including Un rè in ascolto/A King in Waiting, Mitridate, and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg/The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. He has directed War and Peace for the Kirov Opera (1991) and The Queen of Spades at Glyndebourne (1992), where he was made director of productions in 1994. He made his New York debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1994, with Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District; he worked on King Arthur at both the Paris Châtélet and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1995. His work is noted for its artistic fidelity and tendency toward innovation, achieved with an economy of means. |
