Victorville

Town in San Bernardino County, south California; population (1990) 40,700. It is situated on the Mojave River, in the Apple Valley, at the south edge of the Mojave Desert, 80 km/50 mi northeast of Los Angeles. Victorville grew rapidly in the 1980s as a residential community. The town is home to Victor Valley College (1960). George Air Force Base is to the northwest, in Adelanto.

A mining centre from the 1870s to c. 1900, it has produced granite, limestone, and gold, and is now the site of a number of cement plants. Poultry and cattle are raised locally. The town and area were used from c. 1914 by movie studios filming westerns; tourists are now drawn tot he area, especially to the Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Museum.
