Vieira, Antonio (1608–1697)

Portuguese missionary, born in Lisbon, but living most of his life in Brazil. He was educated by the Jesuits in Bahía, Brazil, and entered the Society of Jesus in 1625. His missionary work did much to improve the living conditions of the native peoples. After repeated attacks on Jesuit missions in the region by Paulistas (slavers from São Paulo), Vieira succeeded in getting the enslavement of American Indians banned by Portugal in 1680.
