Vienna, Battle of

    0.02 sec.

Vienna, Battle of

During the Ottoman Wars, unsuccessful siege of Vienna in September–October 1529 by the Turks, commanded by Suleiman the Magnificent. Vienna marked the furthest extent of the Ottoman invasion of the West.

Vienna was held by a garrison of about 16,000 soldiers when an army of 120,000 Turks besieged it. Several desperate assaults were made and repulsed, and Turkish artillery bombarded the walls and eventually breached them. A final attempt by the Turks to storm this breach and enter the city was beaten off with heavy casualties among the Turks. Suleiman therefore raised the siege and retired east.

Vienna, Battle of

Turkish defeat by a Christian army 12 September 1683. The Ottoman Turks had launched a fresh invasion of the West, and Mustapha Pasha was besieging Vienna with about 138,000 troops facing a force of about 40,000 in the city. King John Sobieski of Poland assembled a relief army of 30,000 of various nationalities and advanced on the Turkish lines. After a day of severe fighting the Turks were routed with enormous losses, and retired to the east.
