Vieux Fort

Town and port on the south coast of St Lucia, in the Windward Islands group, West Indies; population (1993 est) 13,800. Vieux Fort is the industrial centre of the island. It is important for the export of bananas; and is a centre for the growing of coconuts and the production of beverages, clothing, paper products, electrical appliances, and machinery. Hewanorra international airport is nearby.

It is the second-largest city in St Lucia, and was formerly the capital of the island. It was named after a 17th-century fort (‘Old’ Fort). The town was the site of St Lucia's first sugar works (established 1765).
