Vigo

Fishing and industrial port and naval station of Pontevedra province in Galicia, northwest Spain, situated on an inlet on the Atlantic coast; population (2001) 280,200. Industries include fish processing, leather and paper production, and distilling.

Vigo was attacked unsuccessfully by Francis Drake in 1585, but was plundered by him in 1589. In 1702, a British and Dutch fleet sank Spanish and French ships in the Bay of Vigo.
