Vasarely, Victor (1908–1997)

Hungarian-born French artist. He was one of the leading exponents of op art. In the 1940s he developed precise geometric compositions, full of visual puzzles and effects of movement, which he created with complex arrangements of hard-edged geometric shapes and subtle variations in colours.

After studying medicine in Budapest, he went to Paris in 1930. He initially worked as a graphic artist, concentrating on black-and-white artwork.
