Villahermosa

River port and capital of the state of Tabasco, 130 km/81 mi northeast of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, in southern Mexico; population (1995 est) 465,449. It is situated on the Grijalva River, which is navigable to the port of Frontera Villahermosa, and is the commercial centre of a district producing coffee, cacao, sugar, rubber, tobacco, and bananas. Industries include the manufacture of cigars, soap, clothing, and wood products. Oil, having been discovered nearby in the 1950s, is the town's major product.

Villahermosa was founded by the Spanish in 1596. The town's museum and the Centro de Investigaciones de las Culturas Olmecas have extensive displays of Maya and Olmec artefacts. To the northwest are the Mayan brick-built ruins of Comacalco.

Villahermosa is home to the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Tabasco (1959). Nearby is La Venta Park which was the site of La Venta, founded in about 900 BC and home to one of the greatest Olmec communities.
