Villard, Henry

Villard, Henry (1835–1900)

German-born US journalist and financier. He covered the American Civil War 1861–65 for the New York Herald and Tribune. An astute investor, he was president of the Edison General Electric Co. 1890–92 and the New York Evening Post 1881–1900.

Born in Germany, Villard immigrated to the USA 1853 and settled in Illinois. He was president of the Oregon and California Railroad 1876, served as president of the Northern Pacific Railroad 1881–84, and was Northern Pacific's chair of the board 1889–93.
