Villefranche-sur-Saône

Town in the département of Rhône, eastern France, situated on the River Saône, 25 km/16 mi northwest of Lyon; population (1990) 55,200 in the surrounding conurbation. It was the capital of the old district of Beaujolais. It is a centre of the Burgundy wine trade and manufactures chemicals and textiles.

The town was founded in the 12th century, and went through three sieges in the 15th and 16th centuries. The town walls were finally dismantled in the 19th century.
