Villeneuve, Pierre (Charles Jean-Baptiste Silvestre) de (1763–1806)

French admiral who commanded the fleet at the battle of Trafalgar in October 1805. In this engagement, almost half his ships were sunk and he was taken prisoner. He was freed the following year and returned to France, but took his own life while travelling to Paris for an audience with Napoleon.

Villeneuve joined the navy at the age of 15, and won rapid promotion, attaining the rank of rear-admiral by 1796. He commanded the rear of the fleet at the French defeat at Aboukir Bay (1798), escaping to Malta with two capital ships and two frigates. In 1804 he was given command of the Toulon squadron.
