Vilyui

River in the Republic of Sakha, eastern Siberia, Russian Federation; a tributary of the Lena; length 2,650 km/1,647 mi. Some 1,170 km/727 mi of the Vilyui is navigable, but the river is frozen from mid-October to mid-May.

Natural gas is found near the mouth of the river, and large diamond deposits have been discovered further west . The first hydroelectric power station in the Lena basin was built on the Vilyui and came on stream in 1967.
