Vineland

Industrial city in Cumberland County, south New Jersey, USA; population (2000) 56,300. It is situated on the Maurice River, 50 km/31 mi southeast of Camden. Lying in a rich vegetable growing and poultry raising region, the city has many cooperative markets and is the agricultural trade, processing, and distribution centre of south New Jersey. Industries include the manufacture of foundry products, glassware, and chemicals. It is home to Cumberland County College (1964).

Vineland was first settled, as an agricultural community in 1861. The wine grape industry that gave the city its name was destroyed by disease in the late 19th century.
