Virden

Small town in southwest Manitoba, Canada; population (1991) 2,900. It is located 64 km/40 mi west of Brandon and 277 km/172 mi west of Winnipeg, near the Assiniboine River. This former agricultural and grain shipping centre in the prairie grew to prosperity in the 1950s with the discovery of rich oil resources, the first in the province to be commercially productive. Farming, potash mining, retail services, and manufacturing also contribute to the economy.
