Virginia Beach

Atlantic coastal resort in southeast Virginia, USA, near the south-shore entrance to Chesapeake Bay, 19 km/12 mi east of Norfolk; population (2000) 425,300. Industries include boatbuilding, and the manufacture of electronics and building materials. Market gardens in the city's agricultural hinterland specialize in strawberries. Nearby military bases include Fort Story Military Reservation, Oceana Naval Air Station, and Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base.

The colonists who founded Jamestown, the first permanent British settlement in North America, first landed here in 1607. Virginia Beach was settled in 1880.

City features include the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts and the Virginia Marine Museum. Seashore State Park lies to the north, and Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park are located to the south.
