Virginia City

Town and administrative headquarters of Storey County, west Nevada, 40 km/25 mi east of Reno; population (1990) 900. The Comstock Lode (one of the largest silver and gold deposits ever found) was discovered in the area in 1857, and Virginia City was established adjacent to the mines in 1859. By 1880 its population is estimated to have reached 25,000, making it the largest city in Nevada. The town now exists chiefly as a popular tourist destination.

The writer Mark Twain lived here 1861–64 while he was a reporter on the local paper, the Territorial Enterprise.
