Viroconium

Roman-British town, the remains of which have been excavated at Wroxeter, Shropshire, England. It was the fourth-largest town in Roman Britain, and was founded in about AD 48 as a legionary camp fortress during Roman campaigns against the Welsh.

Viroconium became a town in about AD 80, when the Cornovii were forced to leave their own hill city on the Wrekin. It became the tribal capital of the Cornovii. A forum and basilica were built by AD 130, and baths and other public buildings followed. Much of the town was destroyed by fire in about AD 300, but the site was occupied until the 4th century.
