Vis

Island in the Adriatic Sea, the outermost of the islands off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia; population (2001) 1,800. The main town is also called Vis. The chief products are wine and sardines.

In 1811 a French–Venetian naval force was defeated near the island by the British, and in 1866 the Austrians were victorious near here over the Italians. This latter engagement was the first between iron-clad steam-driven warships. During World War II Vis was for a time the headquarters of Marshal Tito 's partisans, and it was also used by British commandos.
