Vishakhapatnam

Port in Andhra Pradesh state, east-central India; population (2001) 969,600. It is India's fourth-largest port and the eastern headquarters of the Indian Navy. It is a major shipbuilding port, with a steelworks, oil refinery and deep-water facilities. Other industries include petrochemicals, fertilizer and jute production, and sugar refining. Manganese ore, sugar, and peanuts are exported. The Andhra University, founded in 1926, is located nearby.
