Visalia

City and administrative headquarters of Tulare County, south-central California, USA; population (2000) 91,600. It is situated in the San Joaquin Valley, on the Kaweah River, 56 km/35 mi southeast of Fresno. It is an agricultural centre for grapes, citrus fruits, and dairy products. There is some electronic and other light manufacturing. Visalia was founded 1852 by Nathaniel Vise. The city is a gateway to the Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, which are to its east. The College of the Sequoias (1925) is in Visalia.
