Visby

Historic town and bishopric on the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic that became the centre of the German Hanseatic League.

It was founded as a Viking trading post on the route from Novgorod to the west. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the Scandinavian population became outnumbered by German colonists, and Visby became the nucleus of the Hanseatic League. In 1361, it was conquered by Waldemar IV. It possesses impressive fortifications, dated from the time of the Hanse, and many Gothic churches.
