Viseu

Capital of Viseu district, north-central Portugal; population (1991) 20,600. There are textile industries and an agricultural market. Viseu dates from Roman times, and has a cathedral (partly 12th-century). A chapel nearby is said to contain the tomb of Roderic, the last Visigoth king.

District of north-central Portugal; area 5,003 sq km/1,932 sq mi; population (1991) 401,000; capital Viseu. The district is generally mountainous. Port wine is produced.
