Vitali, Filippo

Vitali, Filippo (c. 1590–1653)

Italian tenor and composer. He worked at Florence until 1631, when he was called to Rome as a singer in the Papal chapel. While there he became attached to the household of Cardinal Francesco Barberini; but in 1642 he returned to Florence to become maestro di cappella to the Duke of Tuscany at San Lorenzo. In 1653 he became a canon there.

opera L'Aretusa (1620); intermedii for J Cicognini's comedy La finta Mora (1623).

Sacred and secular music

psalms for five voices, hymns, Sacrae cantiones (1625), and other church music; madrigals; various works for voices and instruments in several parts.
