Vitali, Tomaso (Antonio) (1663–1745)

Italian violinist and composer. He was best known for his instrumental music; notably trio sonatas and a celebrated chaconne for violin and keyboard (which has recently come into doubt regarding Vitali's authorship of it).

Vitali was taught by his father, Giovanni Battista Vitali, and was later a member of the court chapel at Modena under him. He taught the violin to distinguished pupils, including Evaristo Dall' Abaco and Jean Baptiste Senallié.
