Viterbo

Capital of Viterbo province in Lazio region, west-central Italy, 65 km/40 mi northwest of Rome; population (1990 est) 59,800. Main industries include engineering, construction, and foodstuffs (sausages, cheese, pasta, olive oil). Agriculture and related commerce are important. The service sector is centred on banking, public administration, and transport. Viterbo became the residence of the popes in 1257; it has a papal palace (1266–67), a 12th-century cathedral, and a university.

The old part of Viterbo is surrounded by a wall with seven gates; the medieval appearance is preserved especially in the San Pellegrino quarter, with its tiny streets and squares, fountains, palaces, and numerous churches.

The artists Lorenzo da Viterbo (c. 1440–1476) and Antonio Massari, known as ‘Pastura’ (c. 1450–1509), were born here.
