Vitim

Navigable tributary of the River Lena in the eastern Siberian region of the Russian Federation; length 1,837 km/1,142 mi. The Vitim rises in the Transbaikalian Mountains and follows a broadly northwesterly course. It forms the border between the Buryat Republic and Chita oblast (region), then turns northeast through Irkutsk oblast and joins the Lena near the town of Peleduy. The river's lower course traverses a rich gold-mining area.
