Vitória

Capital of the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil, 420 km/261 mi northeast of Rio de Janeiro; population (1996) 265,874. The city stands on an island off the coast, and is a port and bathing resort, connected to the mainland by two bridges. As a port, its importance has been due to its railway connection with the mining and coffee-growing areas of the state of Minas Gerais, for which it has acted as an export outlet.

On a hill above the town are the ruins of the fortified monastery of Nossa Senhora da Penha, built in 1558. It was attacked by the Dutch in 1625 and again in 1640.
