Vitzthumb, Ignaz (1720-1816)

Austrian-born South Netherlands composer and conductor. He studied in Vienna and settled in Brussels in the service of Prince Charles of Lorraine. He conducted at Ghent, Amsterdam, and at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, but lost his posts and pension during the Revolution and died in poverty.

Works

comic operas Le Soldat par amour (1766), La Foire de village (1786); masses, motets and other church music; four symphonies.
