Vizcaya

Basque form of Biscay, a bay in the Atlantic Ocean off France and Spain.

Vizcaya

Province of northern Spain in the Basque Country autonomous community, on the Bay of Biscay; area 2,209 sq km/853 sq mi; population (1991 est) 1,150,900. Vizcaya is very rich in minerals, including large deposits of iron ore (mined since pre-Roman times), lead, copper, and zinc. Stock-raising, fishing, and agriculture are also important. The capital is Bilbao.

Vizcaya's steelmakers were famous throughout Europe in the Middle Ages for the quality of their swords.
