Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.07 sec.

Vizetelly, Frank Horace (1864–1938)

English lexicographer and editor. He moved to the USA in 1891, where he became the managing editor of the New Standard Dictionary in 1913. He wrote a weekly column for the US journal Literary Digest for over 30 years, explaining questions of grammar, etymology, and usage.

Vizetelly wrote enthusiastically on matters of language in his own books and in interviews and letters to the editors of the New York newspapers. He also served as a language usage adviser to numerous radio stations.

Born in London, England, into a family of printers, he went to the USA after his father suffered imprisonment and financial loss on charges of obscenity for publishing the works of the French novelist Emile Zola.
