Vogelweide, Walther von der (c. 1170-c. 1230)

German poet, Minnesinger, and composer. He was in service at the court of Duke Leopold V in Vienna, then led a wandering life in Germany and after 1220 probably lived at an estate given to him at Würzburg. Only a few of his tunes have survived. He appears as a character in Wagner's Tannhäuser.

He was a pupil of Reinmar von Hagenau in Austria.
