Colima

State of southwestern Mexico, on the Pacific coast; area 5,455 sq km/ 2,106 sq mi; population (2000 est) 540,700. Its capital is Colima. The main occupation is farming.

Colima

Town in Mexico and administrative capital of the state of Colima, lying 500 km/311 mi west of Mexico City; population (1995) 120,800. It is situated at an altitude of 450 m/1,476 ft on the River Colima, and on the south slope of the volcano called Colima (3,680 m/12,073 ft), which last erupted in 1941.Colima is an important agricultural and commercial centre; the main industries are sugar refining, soapmaking, cigarmaking, the production of coconut oil, and the manufacture of shoes. Maize and rice are also traded.

The town is 96 km/60 mi east of the port of Manzanillo and both are on the railway line to Guadalajara and Mexico City.

Colima was founded in 1522. The town has an arcade built in Moorish style on the side of the central square, and a late 19th-century cathedral.
