Volkhov

Navigable river in the northwest of the Russian Federation, flowing from Lake Ilmen north into Lake Ladoga; length 224 km/139 mi.

The former city-state of Novgorod stands on the Volkhov; in the Middle Ages the river formed part of the important trade route from Scandinavia to Byzantium. The first hydroelectric power station in Russia was constructed in 1926 on the lower reaches of the river.
