Volkmann, (Friedrich) Robert (1815–1883)| German composer. He spent much of his life teaching music in Budapest, where he became professor of composition at the Hungarian National Music Academy in 1875. As a composer he was influenced by Schumann and Mendelssohn. |
| Volkmann was taught music by his father, who was a schoolmaster and cantor, and another local musician taught him to play string instruments. In 1836 he went to Leipzig for further study, and was a private music tutor in Prague 1839–41. He lived and taught at Budapest 1841–54 and Vienna 1854–75, then returned to Budapest as professor of composition at the National Music Academy. |
