Volkonsky, Andrei Mikhailovich

Volkonsky, Andrei Mikhailovich (1933–2008)

Russian composer. He is a modernist among Russian composers, using a form of the 12-note system. Discouraged from composing by the Soviet authorities, he emigrated to Israel in 1973.

Volkonsky studied piano with Dinu Lipatti and composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. In 1948 he went to Moscow to study with Yuri Shaporin.

Choral and vocal

cantata The Image of the World (1953); The Laments of Shchaza for soprano and chamber orchestra.

Instrumental

concerto for orchestra (1954); piano quintet (1954); viola sonata.
